Our purpose in helping pregnant women is different than for non-pregnant patients. Quite simply, we serve to help your body adjust to the changes it makes to accommodate a growing baby. Our focus is to relieve the discomforts of pregnancy and to help your pelvis remain balanced and ready for birth.
Pregnancy is a time of great change within…and without. As your baby grows and develops, your body adapts to the changing baby within: your breasts become bigger to prepare for breastfeeding, the curve in your low back increases as your abdomen increases in size, and your head tends to move forwards to maintain itself over your feet. While these observations do not sound that appealing, they are the changes necessary to keep a woman able to move about throughout her pregnancy.
The good news is that you are in the right place to help your body adapt to this ongoing transformation. Chiropractic adjustments help the vertebrae in your spine and your sacrum move more easily and help you to be more comfortable sleeping, sitting, standing, and walking. Benefits such as these are quite valuable to pregnant women especially in their last trimester because at that point, moving about can become challenging.
One of the bonuses of chiropractic care is that women who have regular adjustments before labour and birth experience shorter labour times. On average, first time mothers who were adjusted during their pregnancies achieved 25% shorter labours than women who weren’t under chiropractic care. Women who had previous children and were under chiropractic care experienced 33% shorter labours than women who weren’t seeing a chiropractor during their pregnancies.
Chiropractic adjustments are safe and effective during pregnancy. We take extra care to make sure that pregnant women are comfortable, and all of our adjustments are concentrated on the spine, not the abdomen. Most pregnant women are surprised as to how great chiropractic adjustments feel!
