Cure ADD/ADHD Naturally

5 Steps To Eliminate ADD/ADHD And Improve Your Health

Step 1 - Calm Down Your Nervous System

Your brain, spinal cord and nerves make up your nervous system.  For some reason, ADD/ADHD kids have problems with the way that their brains talk to their bodies.  Some messages from the brain get where they are supposed to go without difficulty.  Some messages are changed as they travel from the brain, down the spinal cord, out through the nerves to the different muscles and organs of the body.  Some nerves can fire when they are not even supposed to.  A nervous system that doesn’t work efficiently can create some of the behaviours of ADD/ADHD kids.

How Can You Calm Down Your Nervous system?

There are many ways for you to improve the way that your nervous system functions:

Chiropractic Adjustments

Chiropractors are really nerve doctors.  We assess how the individual vertebrae of the spine are moving because a vertebra that is stuck or not moving properly can pinch or choke nerves that exit the spine.  Because these nerves aren’t able to work at their full potential, digestive problems, headaches, poor immune system function, back and neck pain can result.

People who are adjusted regularly have better functioning nervous systems.  By adjusting the fixed areas of the spine (Chiropractors call them subluxations), the nervous system is able to function at its optimum health potential and the child experiences optimal health. Indeed, a study showed a direct correlation of between chiropractic care for children and superior health.  Children respond to adjustments quickly and remarkable improvements in overall health can be made.

ADD/ADHD kids who are adjusted regularly are better able to sit still and concentrate in school because their nerves work in a more coordinated fashion.  Parents of ADD/ADHD kids notice that if their children miss their adjustments, they become active and fidgety once more.

Brain Gym

Brain Gym is a series of quick, fun and energizing activities that are effective in preparing any learner for specific thinking and coordination skills.
There are two types of learning patterns; whole brain and survival. When learning in a stress free environment we are able to move information quickly between both hemispheres of the brain. Under stress we create a “just get through” survival pattern which inhibits whole brain function.
Brain Gym strengthens the integration between the mind and body. It increases the ability of the left and right hemispheres of the brain to communicate, leading to increased relaxation, and improved ability to focus and remember.
People who incorporate Brain Gym in their day experience:

  • Improved concentration and memory
  • Effective stress management
  • Increased self-esteem
  • Improved reading, writing and mathematical abilities
  • Communication and organization skills
  • Identifying and avoiding stress
  • Dealing with depression
  • Clear thinking
  • Improved co-ordination for all physical activities such as Golf, Running, Squash, Yoga, etc.
  • Increased mental energy
  • Expanded creativity
  • Decreased test anxiety
  • Effective team building strategies
  • Joyful learning experiences

http://www.teachnet.ie/farmnet/Digestive.htmStep 2 - Heal Your Leaky Gut

The cells that make up the cell walls of our intestines absorb food particles and act as a barrier to keep out bacteria and toxins.  If these cells become worn down by chemicals in our food, pesticides or even bacteria or viruses, they lose their ability to act as filters for all the things that we eat and drink.  Then substances that shouldn’t cross the lining of our intestines are able to pass through: bacteria, viruses, parasites and undigested food molecules.

How Can You Heal Your Leaky Gut?

The intestinal lining replaces itself every 14 hours. When cells that make up the lining are digested or sloughed off, new ones grow in their place.  With a change in diet and added essential nutrients, it is entirely possible to heal a dysfunctional digestive system.

To help make things easier for you and your family, the nutritional supplements listed below will be discounted by 25%.  There are many options as to how many of these to take, or in which order.  You are under no obligation to use the supplements listed below, however, they are better quality that what you would find in a health food store.  The commitment to taking these supplements for the best results depends upon how fast your body heals.  A good estimate is 3 months.

Increase the Number of Good Bacteria In Your Large Intestine

When we are healthy, we have LOTS of good bacteria in our large intestines (or colon).  People who have not enough good bacteria and too much bad bacteria have a weakened immune system. They experience more allergic reactions to foods and they can develop yeast infections (yeast infections cause you to crave sugary sweet foods).

By taking Ultra Flora Plus®, , you increase the amount of good bacteria in your body and reduce the symptoms of ADD/ADHD.

Ultra Flora Plus® is a patented† probiotic formula that provides highly viable, pure strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus (NCFM® strain) and Bifidobacterium lactis along with supportive factors. Ultra Flora Plus:

Eat Hemp Hearts Each Morning

Many kids with ADD and ADHD usually don’t get enough Omega 3 fatty acids in their diets, and hemp hearts contain the daily requirement for essential fatty acids (omega 3’s & 6’s).  Hemp Hearts are shelled hemp seeds and contain a great source of protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins and enzymes.

If you start each day with 4 tablespoons of hemp hearts in yogurt and Easy-To-Make Granola (the recipe is included in your workshop info pack), you will find that you don’t crave sweet foods as much.  You will also have LOTS of energy throughout your day.

You can find hemp hearts at your nearest health food store.

Add Lots Of Healing Foods To Your Diet

Some foods have greater healing properties than others because they are more alkaline.  Alkaline foods help to heal a leaky gut.

The healing foods are: almonds, apple, apricot, avocado, banana, beans, beets, berries (blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries), broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cherries, chestnuts, coconut, cucumber, currants, dates, eggplant, garlic, grapefruit, grapes, figs, kale, kohlrabi, lemon, lettuce, lime, mango, melons (cantaloupe, watermelon), molasses, mushrooms, nectarine, okra, olives, onion, orange, parsley, peaches, peas, pears, peppers, pineapple, potatoes, pumpkin, radish, raisins, rhubarb, rutabaga, spinach, sprouts, squash, tangerine, tomato, turnip, watercress, yams.

Step 3 - Eliminate Foods That Cause Problems For You

Many kids with ADD and ADHD symptoms have problems with the foods that they are eating.

Eliminate Sugar From Your Diet

USDA surveys indicate that the average teenager eats at least 109 pounds of sugar per year, while the average American eats approximately 64 pounds of sugar per year.

The recommended daily limit of added sugar is 10 teaspoons, or the amount of sugar in one can of Coke.   “Added sugars” include: table sugar or sucrose (cane and beet), corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, corn sugar, glucose, honey, and others. It does not include the sugars in milk, fruit, and vegetables, of which all of us should be consuming more, because of the nutrients and fibre in those foods.

How Can You Reduce Your Intake of Sugar?

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO CHANGE: Eat a protein-rich breakfast with complex carbohydrates within one hour of waking up each morning.  Eat protein rich snacks throughout the day to reduce your cravings for sugar.

Protein and complex carbohydrates get your blood sugars up and keep them level.  This provides you with lots of energy and the ability to say “no” to sugar.  To keep your blood sugar levels up, you need to eat a protein rich snack with complex carbohydrates every three hours.  This means eating all of your meals and having a small snack at recess and after school.  If you eat this way throughout the day, your body will not crave sugar as it once did.

Complex carbohydrates are foods that include the packaging that is provided by nature- the outer coatings of the grains.  Foods such as whole grains, whole grain breads and pastas, brown rice and beans are digested by the body at a much slower rate because the body has to work harder to break down the entire complex carbohydrate.  Blood sugar levels rise at slower rates when the body digests whole grains, which is more optimal than huge waves of sugar produced by eating or drinking simple carbohydrates (sweetened drinks, table sugar, white flour, white rice, white breads, soda crackers).

Start downsizing all of the pop or soft drinks that you drink in a day --Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Sprite, Ginger ale, orange pop, grape pop, cream soda, root beer, iced tea, Gatorade and all of the other sweet drinks should really be called "liquid candy" because they contain by far the biggest source of sugar in the average teenager’s diet. Drink the size smaller than you usually order.  Then the next size down until you can comfortably drink filtered or bottled water instead.

  • Avoid fruit "drinks," "beverages," "ades," and "cocktails," which are essentially non-carbonated soda pop. Sunny Delight, Fruitopia, and others are only 5%-10% juice.  Drink filtered or bottled water instead.

  • Eliminate all sugar cereals like Froot Loops, Captain Crunch, Corn Pops, Honey Nut Cheerios, Frosted Flakes and all the other cereals that make your milk sweet.  Look for breakfast cereals that have no more than 8 grams of sugar per serving.  Please refer to the two articles that discuss the amount of sugar in breakfast cereals in your workshop info pack.
  • Check nutrition and ingredient labels for sugar and its equivalents, including sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, dextrose, glucose, fructose, maltose, honey and molasses.  If any of these are the first 3 ingredients listed on the ingredients list of a food that you would like to eat, avoid it altogether.  It contains too much sugar.

  • Substitute high protein snacks and fruits for candy, cookies, cakes, pies, doughnuts, granola bars, pastries, and other sweet baked goods.  Check out our high protein snack suggestions and make sure that you are snacking between breakfast and lunch and after school.

Aspartame Or Other Artificial Sweeteners Create More Problems Than Sugar!!!!

Some of you may decide that if you eat or drink foods that contain artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, that you’ll be able to have sweets in your life and avoid sugar.  This could not be more wrong.  First, if you eat something sweet, your body registers that you’ve eaten something sweet, and your cravings will not go away.  Second, the effects of aspartame themselves are worse for people with ADD/ADHD as they produce some the undesirable symptoms.  It is also harder to get rid of cravings for aspartame than it is for sugar.

Aspartame is broken down by your body into 3 compounds: aspartic acid, methyl alcohol and phenylalanine.  When your body digests the methyl alcohol, it breaks it down to formaldehyde.  Formaldehyde is a cancer causing compound that funeral directors use to preserve dead bodies!!!  Why would you want this chemical in your growing body? Avoid all foods and drinks that contain artificial sweeteners.

Here is an article by Dr. Julian Whitaker about the negative effects of aspartame on your body:
From http://www.dorway.com/jwnoasp.html

I am convinced that our blind acceptance of aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful), plays a significant role in our current weight problems. Far from helping us lose weight, aspartame has been proven to increase appetite, especially cravings for sweets. Imagine "diet" products that help you pack on extra pounds! And aspartame's downside doesn't end with weight gain: This sweetener is associated with multiple health problems.
Even more serious disorders have a suspected link with aspartame. Is it an accident that the incidence of brain tumors has increased by 10% since l975? John W. Olney, MD, of the Washington University Medical School in St. Louis believes there may be a link between the two. In an article published in The Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology, he notes that animal studies reveal high levels of brain tumors in aspartame-fed rats. According to Dr. Olney, recent findings show that aspartame has mutagenic (cancer-causing) potential, and the sharp rise in malignant brain tumors coincides with the increased use of aspartame.
Aspartame is comprised of two amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine. Aspartic acid acts as an "excitatory" neurotransmitter, or chemical messenger, in the brain, stimulating neurons to fire. Problems can arise when aspartic acid is out of balance with "inhibitory" amino acids that calm things down. Phenylalanine also easily enters the brain, where it is transformed into neurotransmitters that can further interfere with normal brain function.
This is a likely reason why aspartame lowers the threshold for seizures, mood disorders, and other nervous system problems. This altered brain chemistry may also be responsible for the addictive nature of aspartame. Some patients report that getting off diet soda takes more willpower than giving up cigarettes!

Identify Any Allergies That You Might Have

The foods that you crave are usually the ones that you are allergic to.  Believe it or not, when you eat a food that creates a low-grade allergic response (or food intolerance), your body starts to fight the food as if it was a bacterial infection.

The most common foods that North Americans are allergic to are: milk and dairy products (especially if you were bottle fed as a baby), wheat, corn, soy, peanuts, and pork.

Most people continually eat the foods that cause allergic reactions to avoid the symptoms of withdrawal: feeling tired, feeling weak, having headaches, feeling grouchy, feeling depressed. Your body tells you to eat or drink the food again so that you enter the fighting stage of the allergy and delay the bad effects of the withdrawal symptoms.

You might not be allergic to milk and dairy products, wheat, corn, soy, peanuts or pork, but chances are if you think about the foods that you just have to have every day, one of these might be on the list.  These are the foods that you have to take out of your diet for at least two months so that your leaky gut can heal itself.

Step 4 - Drink Lots Of Filtered Water

Why Drink At Least Two Litres Of Water A Day?

Because that's roughly how much water we lose normally through sweating, waste removal and other body functions. Add hot weather or enough exercise to break a sweat and the amount of water you need to stay healthy and hydrated increases. Your body loses water from: your skin by perspiration, your kidneys by urinating (peeing), your lungs by breathing out water vapor, and your intestine by defecating (pooping). Water keeps your whole body system in physical balance: your energy up, your weight down, your muscles strong, your joints flexible, and your digestive system working well.

Water is important to drink.  The average adult body is 55 to 75% water. Since such a large percentage of our bodies is water, water must obviously be important as to how our bodies function.

Your brain is 75% water

Your blood is 83% water.

Your heart is 75% water.

Your lungs are 86% water.

Why Is It Important to Drink Filtered Water?

The presence of chemicals in tap water can negatively influence your health.  Tap water contains heavy metals, nitrates, chlorinated and aromatic solvents, and chlorination by-products, as well as chemicals that are found in the air that we breathe and from the soil where we grow our food.  We are polluting our environment… and ultimately ourselves.  While the intention of adding chlorine into drinking water is to kill any bad bugs that can grow there, the result is that chlorine reacts with organic matter in the water to form a dangerous carcinogenic compound called trihalomethane.

Filtered tap water has almost no chlorine and it takes out most of the harmful chemicals.  It is a much healthier choice than regular tap water.

Step 5 - Turn off Your TV and Get Moving

The Effects Of Too Much TV On Healthy Child Or Teen Development

From http://www.media-awareness.ca/english/parents/television/tv_impact_kids.cfm
Television can affect learning and school performance if it cuts into the time kids need for activities crucial to healthy mental and physical development. Most of children's free time, especially during the early formative years, should be spent in activities such as playing, reading, exploring nature, learning about music or participating in sports.
TV viewing is a sedentary activity, and has been proven to be a significant factor in childhood obesity. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada almost one in four Canadian children, between seven and 12, is obese. Time spent in front of the TV is often at the expense of more active pastimes.
A Scientific American article entitled "Television Addiction" examined why children and adults may find it hard to turn their TVs off. According to researchers, viewers feel an instant sense of relaxation when they start to watch TV—but that feeling disappears just as quickly when the box is turned off. While people generally feel more energized after playing sports or engaging in hobbies, after watching TV they usually feel depleted of energy. According to the article "this is the irony of TV: people watch a great deal longer than they plan to, even though prolonged viewing is less rewarding."
As well as encouraging a sedentary lifestyle, television can also contribute to childhood obesity by aggressively marketing junk food to young audiences. According to the Canadian Paediatric Society, most food advertising on children's TV shows is for fast foods, candy and pre-sweetened cereals. Commercials for healthy food make up only 4 per cent of those shown.

A lot of money goes into making ads that are successful in influencing consumer behaviour. McDonald's, the largest food advertiser on TV, reportedly spent $500 million on their "We love to see you smile" ad campaign.

Exercise Helps You To Get Fit AND Burn Off Your Excess Energy

Everyone can benefit from regular exercise. A child who is active will:

  • have stronger muscles and bones
  • have a leaner body because exercise helps control body fat
  • be less likely to become overweight
  • decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes
  • possibly lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels
  • have a better outlook on life

In addition to the health benefits of regular exercise, kids who are physically fit sleep better and are better able to handle the physical and emotional challenges that a typical day presents - be that running to catch a bus, bending down to tie a shoe, or studying for a test.

Aerobic exercise can be fun for both adults and children. Some examples of aerobic activities include:

  • basketball
  • bicycling
  • ice-skating
  • in-line skating
  • soccer
  • swimming
  • tennis
  • walking
  • jogging
  • running
  • softball
  • hiking

How Much Exercise Is Enough?

The percentage of children who are overweight has more than doubled over the past 30 years. Although many factors are contributing to this epidemic, kids sitting around a lot more than they used to.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the average child is watching about 3 hours of television a day. And the average kid spends 5 1/2 hours on all media combined, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Parents need to ensure that their children are getting enough exercise. So, how much is enough? According to the 2005 dietary guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), all children 2 years and older should get 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise on most, preferably all, days of the week.
